Default Reaper Help

I'm think to use Reaper as my daw, right now i use Live in the Korg edition , but it's really limited and i won't afford the upgrade (i prefer use my little money for funding my modular ) so i've pointed my attention on reaper but i'm really disoriented ...

My goal is use Numerology and SW in Reaper to control and recording my modular and use the BCR2000 as controller for Reaper.
I see that here there are some Reaper user.. so give some help to start.

thanks in advance
diego

Hi Diego,

I've been using Reaper for about a year so on the one hand I'm not an expert but on the other I do clearly remember the disorientation you are talking about so maybe I can help some. I'm not sure where you are up to with it so please feel free to hit me up with any specific questions you have but here are a few random thoughts:

- New Reaper tracks are very generic and flexible. You have to set all the routings of ins and outs up yourself but then once you do you can easily save your routings as a track template that you can recall at any time. A track template doesn't have to be one track either - for example I have a Voyager hardware synth and have made a template that loads up two tracks - one with sending midi to the Voyager (from my control keyboard and from an instance of the Numerology VST and one which receives the audio from it.

-to route audio into a track

(i) create a new track
(ii) click the button labeled "IN OUT" (close to the monitor speaker symbol on both the track mixer and TCP)and select your input option (note here is where you also select at what stage of the track material is recorded and what is monitored).
(iii) To be able to hear the input you need now to click the monitor speaker symbol so that it turns green and enable record by pressing the red record button. It is not 100% correct but when you are starting out it's probably best to assume you always have record enabled and the monitor on if you want a track to receive midi or audio.

- to load the Numerology VST and route midi from it to a hardware synth:

(i) create a new track
(ii) click the FX button
(iii) select the Numerology VST (it should be in the VSTi section)
(iv) click the i/o button(on the track mixer or track control panel(TCP) ) and set up MIDI Hardware Output to wherever you need and specify the MIDI channel setting.

-to route MIDI from a controller keyboard into this same track and through to your hardware

(i) click the button labeled "IN OUT" (close to the monitor speaker symbol on both the track mixer and TCP)and select your MIDI input option
(ii)within the Numerology VST connect the MIDI input directly to MIDI output
(iii) enable record and monitoring as in the previous example

Say you are using these two tracks you have created to control and monitor one of your hardware instruments and you would like to be able to recall this setting what you now do is select both these tracks, right click them(in the TCP) and click Save Tracks as Track Template and then you are able to create a new track from that template anytime.

-the actions function is what you use to up keyboard shortcuts and to map midi controls. Once you know that "Actions" is the key word you will probably find the manual does an excellent job of explaining this.

- You can customise almost anything to suit previous workflow habits you may have. For instance by default command-drag is used to drag and copy media files in Reaper but I'm in the habit of using alt-drag in every other application I have. It's quite easy to customise this using the actions function

-midi learn works fine with the Numerology VST with no extra midi routing necessary but sometimes you get latency issues or just general weirdness if you don't have record enabled on the track hosting the VST.

-There's a great newbie section in the forum. Here are a couple of links that can be useful for starting out:

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=25764

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=76872

-One thing that for me took the sting away from the slowness and pain of learning yet another program is that navigating audio and midi tracks can be super fast in Reaper. It may be very much a personal preference but in the Reaper preferences under Editing Behaviour/Mouse set Mouswheel Targets to Window under cursor and middle button to Jogs/scrubs and see if it works for you. It means your mouse scroll wheel controls zoom and zooms in and out from wherever the cursor is and I find it much faster for navigating an arrangement than anything else I've tried.

I hope something there helps a bit and feel free to ask any specific questions regardless

Have you tried the more typical route to send clock within MIDI setup prefs? This worked out for me...

I'd highly recommend using Jack for audio integration. Works *perfectly* between numerology and Reaper.
